Structured data and schema markup for GEO
Schema markup helps machines understand your content. For GEO it's an indirect signal, not a guarantee. Here's what really matters and how to use it honestly.

Clear to a human doesn't mean clear to a machine
You reread your page and everything seems obvious. A price, a date, an author, a rating: a human recognizes them at a glance. A machine, though, only sees text with no labels. It has to guess what's a price and what's a phone number.
Schema markup fills that gap: it explicitly labels your information. It's a technical building block of the same effort as your presence in the answers of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini: useful, but to be handled without over-promising.
Schema markup, quick reminder
Schema markup is a standardized vocabulary (schema.org) that you add to your code, most often in JSON-LD. It describes the nature of your content: this is an article, this is an organization, this is a frequently asked question.
Invisible to the visitor, this markup is read by machines. It turns ambiguous text into qualified data whose meaning no longer depends on interpretation.
Does it really help GEO?
Let's be honest. Schema is an established signal for search engines: it powers rich snippets and helps Google understand your pages. For LLMs, its role is more indirect.
Most models rely first on visible text, not on JSON-LD. But a well-marked-up site is often better indexed by the engines that feed generative answers, and markup that also structures the visible content helps everyone. Schema is a support, not a magic lever. Don't oversell it, don't neglect it.
The schemas that matter
Article
For your editorial content. It qualifies the title, the author, the date and the topic, and clearly signals that this is in-depth content rather than a transactional page.
FAQPage
For your questions and answers. It explicitly links each question to its answer, a format that machines and LLMs pick up especially well.
Product
For your product pages. It labels the name, the description, the price and the reviews, information that models reuse when they describe or compare offers.
Organization
For your brand identity. It consolidates your name, your logo, your official profiles, and helps machines connect all your pages to a single trustworthy entity.
HowTo
For your tutorials and procedures. It breaks a process into ordered steps, a format that's directly reusable to answer "how do I" questions.
Mistakes to avoid
Invalid markup. Malformed schema is ignored, or even penalized. Validate it systematically with a structured-data testing tool before you deploy.
Markup that lies. The markup has to match the visible content exactly. Advertising a rating or a price that doesn't appear on the page is penalized and breaks trust. Consistency comes first, exactly like with the llms.txt file that makes your site readable: what you declare has to match reality.
How Shiiift handles your structured data
Shiiift identifies the pages that would benefit from markup, suggests the right schema type, and checks the consistency between your markup and your visible content. You avoid silent errors without becoming a JSON-LD expert.
The whole thing stays honestly framed: schema strengthens your machine readability, on top of clear text, with no promise of guaranteed ranking.
